The SAGE program has been presented by Dr Francis Macnab, Executive Director of Cairnmillar, for over 25 years. The aim of the research is to evaluate its applicability to additional audiences and communities, with a view to developing training and dissemination of the method as a preventive intervention for older Australians at risk of losing life purpose, self-worth, and vital coping strengths in later years, and during the transitions of retirement.
SAGE helps people aged 55 years and older to learn about, and apply psychological insights to help them age more effectively and enjoyably. Each monthly SAGE session comprises of a brief lecture defining the psychology topic of the day, with a de-identified case study relevant to the topic, a facilitated large group discussion and summary of learning. Recent topics have included Strengthening Confidence in Meeting Major Losses and Turning Points (April 2012), and Processes to Revitalise Resilience and Well-being in the Second Half of Life (March 2012).
